This "Food Processing NC II/Introduction to Food Processing" certification is concerned with converting raw agricultural products for consumption. It is responsible for a range of products found in grocery and sari-sari stores.

In the Philippines, the food processing industry is part of the manufacturing sector and accounts for 7.31% share in total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Local employment in the food and beverage industry has gone up to 880,000 in 2013 and is expected to increase as the food processing industry expands.

Ninety percent of the industry’s output is consumed domestically. As the population increases, work in the food processing industry remains relevant.

Full adoption of organic crop production technology depends largely on the availability and cost of organic fertilizer in the market considering the large volume of organic fertilizer application per unit area per unit time. One solution is for growers to produce their own requirement using whatever available organic residues in their farm.

This "Organic Fertilizer for Sustainable Agriculture" online course discusses methods of production and application of organic fertilizer for your own use, if not, as additional source of income for the family. Likewise, it discusses the factors that could influence the quality of the organic fertilizer you produce.

Module 1 deals with the guidelines in selecting organic materials for composting, and the costs and returns when producing your own organic fertilizer.

Module 2 on the other hand discusses the natural farming inputs, specifically the liquid organic farm inputs, the raw materials and procedures in preparing the inputs, their uses and application rates, advantages and limitations, and their production costs.

Module 3 tackles the application of organic fertilizer for growing tropical vegetables. This module explains the general principle and procedure in applying organic fertilizer in organic vegetable production.

Health and environmental issues have changed the landscape of agriculture. The clamor for healthier products and the use of environmentally-friendly technologies are steadily gaining ground. The effect is already being felt by rice farmers. Though, only a small portion of the population is demanding for organic rice, another portion of the population which is growing in number clamor for at the very least pesticide-free agriculture produce. This consciousness of the consumers for “healthier” rice need to be responded by the farmers producing rice.

Considering these concerns, today, I completed an online certification course from the e-Learning for Agriculture and Fisheries (http://e-extension.gov.ph/elearning/), a major component of the Department of Agriculture - Philippines's e-Extension Program, with the Agricultural Training Institute (Home of e-Extension in the Philippines) as the lead implementing agency, in collaboration with other government agencies, state universities and colleges and non-government organizations.

This self-paced online course "GROWING RICE ORGANICALLY (ORICE1)" is not a step by step guide to organic rice production. However, it only includes practices that are in consonance with organic farming. It offers management option to farmers who wish to shift from a chemical-based farming system towards organic farming.

To be eligible for the Certificate of Completion, you have to access all the nine lessons in the three modules and pass the three End of Module tests. There's only 1 attempt per module test. Thus, you need to take down notes and study your lessons. Passing is 60 for the whole course.
